Sodium Formate in Arunachal-Pradesh
Sodium Formate ($HCOONa$) is the sodium salt of formic acid, valued for its hygroscopic nature and excellent buffering capacity. In the Arunachal Pradesh construction landscape, it is utilized to enhance the early strength of concrete in hydroelectric dam projects and mountain tunneling, where traditional accelerators may fail due to the cold climate. Scientifically, it is preferred in the tanning industry for its ability to improve the exhaustion of chrome, leading to a more sustainable and efficient leather treatment process. Furthermore, its fully biodegradable and chloride-free properties align with the environmental mandates of Arunachal’s biodiversity hotspots, making it a safe and effective chemical solution for industrial units operating in the Papum Pare and West Siang districts.
Major Applications:
1. Leather industry as tanning agent
2. Oil Drilling field / Oilfield chemicals : In exploratory drilling, high-density saturated sodium formate solution can enhance machines’ high-temperature resistance, prevent rust and exhibit microbial degradation functions. The use of sodium formate helps stabilize the rock layer and reduce the impact on the soil environment during oil explorations.
3. As a de-icer on airport runways due to its effectiveness and less contamination than Salt. It melts the ice rapidly without damaging the asphalt
4. Pulp and paper industry - In production of sodium hydrosulphite / dithionite (a bleaching agent)
5. Textile industry - fabric dyeing and printing process
6.Construction industry
7. Electroplating process
8. As animal feed additive - used as a dietary electrolyte balance (dEB) enhancer
9. Formic acid manufacturing
